Press Release: 24 August 2009

“Linking Media with Agriculture and Development in Africa”

Inter Press Service (IPS) Africa will host a training workshop for journalists and produce a conference newspaper in Maputo, Mozambique, where more than two hundred government officials, professors, farmers and researchers from across Southern Africa are meeting next week to discuss agriculture and economic development.

IPS Africa has partnered with The Food Agriculture Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN) to train 20 selected journalists, prior to the Dialogue, on how to better report the issues of agriculture, food security, climate change and economic development in Africa. The team of reporters and Editors will generate news and analysis on a daily basis, which will be available for publication by interested media.

IPS Africa will also produce an online and printed ‘TerraViva’ conference newspaper, to provide an independent communication platform for delegates at the 2009 Dialogue. The past archives of IPS TerraViva can be found at: http://ipsterraviva.net.

FANRPAN will convene its Annual Regional Stakeholders Dialogue during 01-04 September 2009, entitled “True Contribution of Agriculture to Economic Growth and Poverty Reduction in Southern African countries”. The meeting aims to show stakeholders through evidence-based research, the potential contribution agriculture can make to the economies of Southern Africa.
